| Additional description of the product |
The Uys family acquired the Estate, originally called
Houmoed, in 1962. Of the 126 hectares, 101 hectares
are planted under vines. The farm is situated against
the Bottelary Hills outside Stellenbosch and the altitude
of the vineyards varies between 170 and 370
metres above sea level. Winemaker Marinus Bredell
was appointed in 1997 and the first wines under the
Fort Simon label were released in 1998.
The vineyards
The grapes came from 19 to 21-year-old low trellised
and bush vine vineyards planted in decompose granite
soil and facing north to northeast at between 195 and
300 metres above sea level.
The winemaking
After settling of the juice the must was fermented 50%
in 300 litre barrels of 2nd fill and 50% in stainless
steel tank lined with wooden staves. The young wine
spent 6 months on the fermentation lees before it was
stabilized and filtered.
Winemaker’s comments
Fresh citrus, lime approach with a touch of orangepeel
and cinnamon, superbly blended with soft vanilla
and apricot on the palate, for a long zesty aftertaste. |
